When does diablo 3 save my game

Shy 7 years ago 1. So I just started adventure mode. I finished the first 5 bounties and killed the bosses. I was able to open the rift but had to quit before I got that started.

I came back on played with a friend then tried to start from where I was and now I have to do all the bounties over again. Can I now only play Adventure mode and not play the story? Owned Buy now Pre-order now. Owned Free. New releases. On sale now.
