Not ideal by any means. This has been my experience as well. The sound is perfect on my end but whoever I call ends up hearing an echo. When I skype with the computer on the headset I don't have the echo problem, only on the phone. Yep, same for me.
Fine on my PC based app with the headset but the phone is almost un-usable. Same here, after reading a couple of good reviews I bought a base station and two extra handsets.
When calling via the landline or to another older type skype phone it is ok, but when i make a call to someone running skype on their pc or laptop, they all tell me the sound is far too loud and has very bad quality.
